Youth Classes (ages 7-12)

Winter SESSION DATES: January-June 2023

Youth dance classes at Dovetail Studios include ballet, tap, jazz, contemporary and musical theater. Students learn the fundamental skills of each discipline and gain more proficiency each year.  Our classes not only teach dance skills but life skills. While they are learning to dance, they are also learning discipline that will carry on throughout their lives. Students will learn to think out of the box and gain critical thinking skills.

Youth Ballet (Level 1, 2 & 3)

Ages 7-10

Youth Ballet 1 is a foundational class in classical ballet. This class will focus on learning feet and leg positions, placement and alignment of the body and arm (port de bras), jumps and pirouettes.

Youth Ballet 2: A full year of Youth Ballet 1 (or equivalent) is required to join Youth Ballet 2.

Youth Ballet 3: A full year of Youth Ballet 2 (or equivalent) is required to join Youth Ballet 3.

DRESS CODE

  • Light blue leotard, pink tights and ballet shoes are required. Hair should be pulled into a tight bun.

  • White shirt, black tights, leggings or black shorts, and ballet shoes. Hair must be out of the face.

Registration required, repeatable. One class per week.

To register, dancer must turn 7 before Feb 1st 2022

Musical Theatre Dance (Level 1 & 2)

Ages 7-12

Youth Musical Theatre is a sharp and fast-paced technique that incorporates jazz technique with the big stages of broadway in mind. This class teaches rhythm and timing, as well as builds strength and coordination with music from the biggest shows!

Dancers must complete one full year of Level 1 to join Level 2.

DRESS CODE

  • Leotard and black tights. Shorts may be worn over tights. Jazz shoes.

Registration required, repeatable. One class per week. We recommend students take a ballet class in addition to this class.

To register, dancer must turn 7 before Feb 1st 2022.

Youth Tap (Levels 1 & 2)

Ages 7-12

Youth Tap 1 is introduction to basic exercises and routines that develop rhythm, coordination, and conditioning. This class is also for those who want to brush up on their basic tap skills and prefer to move at a slow and easy pace.

Youth Tap 2 A full year of Youth Tap 1 (or equivalent) is required to join Youth Tap 2.

DRESS CODE

  • Black leotard and black tights. Tap shoes required. Hair must be pulled back.

  • White shirt and black leggings. Tap shoes required

Registration required, repeatable. One class per week.

Youth Hip Hop (Level 1/2 & Adv)

Ages 8 -12

This class combines hip hop foundations/technique with trendy hip hop choreography. Foundations includes elements of breaking, whacking, house dancing, popping and locking.

Youth Hip Hop 2: A full year of Youth Hip Hop 1 (or equivalent) is required to join Youth Hip Hop 2.

Youth Hip Hop Advanced: A full year of Youth Hip Hop 2 (or equivalent) is required to join Youth Hip Hop Adv.

DRESS CODE

Comfortable and moveable clothing. No skirts or dresses. Clean gym shoes. Hair pulled away from face.

To register, dancer must turn 8 before Feb 1st 2022.

Youth Contemporary Jazz

Ages 7-10

Contemporary Jazz takes what they have learned in ballet and spicing it up a bit with a focus on isolations, flexibility and across the floor combinations. In this class, dancers will warm. up, strengthen muscles, locomote across the floor, build floor skills.

DRESS CODE

  • White shirt, black pants and bare feet.
  • Black leotard, black tights, shorts allowed over tights, and bare feet

Youth Ballet/Jazz Combo

Ages 7-10

Youth Ballet/Jazz Combo class teaches students important foundations of ballet technique. Students focus on proper placement of the legs, arms and torso as well as traveling steps and jumps. Students transition into jazz later in the class. Applying what they've learned to jazz technique to sharpen their isolations, jumps, and performance.

  • White shirt, black tights, leggings or black shorts. Ballet and jazz shoes are required.

Youth Ballet/Tap Combo

Ages 7-10

Youth Ballet/Tap Combo teaches the foundations of ballet technique. Students focus on proper placement of the legs, arms and torso as well as traveling steps and jumps. Students will transition into tap, learning foundational tap steps. Students focus on musicality and rhythm.

  • Light blue leotard, pink tights. Ballet and tap shoes are required. Hair should be pulled into a tight bun.

  • White shirt, black tights. Black leggings or black shorts. Ballet and tap shoes are required.

Youth Modern

Ages 8-12

Youth Modern is a beginning modern technique class. Often called contemporary, modern has an expressive and free quality while maintaining codified technique. Dancers explore rhythm, floor work and traveling through the space.

  • White shirt, black pants and bare feet
  • Black leotard, black tights (shorts allowed over tights) and bare feet.

The Actor’s Workshop

Ages 8-12

Take the stage and become a playwright all in one class. Young actors will perform scenes, monologues and songs, as well as, create characters and sets to hit every section of the acting world.

DRESS CODE

Black top or leotard, black leggings and clean gym shoes. Hair should be pulled back.

Trainee Company - Ballet

Ages 7-12. By audition only.

Dovetail Studios’ Trainee Company is an accelerated track meant for children who love to dance and want to focus on ballet technique in an accelerated way. The type of child that the trainee program is designed for is those who have a high interest in dance, great focus, attention to detail as well as natural ability.

Those in the trainee program will be required to meet twice a week for ballet class, 75 minutes per class. Classes will be augmented with some basic character dancing, which enhances rhythm and performance.

Students are encouraged to register for other classes outside the ballet technique including tap, musical theatre and hip hop, if they so choose. Our mission is to train dancers using a holistic approach in a joyous and supportive environment.

Two ballet classes per week required.
