The Competitive Dance Company

For Dovetail Students Ages 8 & up

Competitive dance improves techniques and abilities in a young dancer's life. It’s a unique experience where measurable improvements can be seen quickly, helping dancers gain more confidence when moving their bodies and participating under pressure. After gaining a new appreciation for their dance capabilities, our students are given many opportunities to shine during live performances.

As a member of Dovetail Studios Competitive Dance Company, a dancer will have a built-in group of friends and be part of a community of like-minded kids. Team members will learn new skills from each other and bond over a love of dance in a supportive environment. As part of The Company, members will naturally hold each other accountable or help each other when necessary. Together, company members will get a taste of what it’s like to be a “pro”!

Dovetail Studio places a priority on process and learning rather than solely on winning at all costs. Committed to making dance a standard part of life, our storefront studio is a welcoming place with a community feel. Our courses are taught by courteous and knowledgeable instructors who are there to work with you - no matter what stage of dance you are in.

As a studio run by professional dancers, we know what it takes to be successful in the field of dance. It is our promise that each child will learn dance in a way that builds confidence and skill. For more goal driven dancers, The Company will provide opportunities to excel and achieve new goals. We are committed to educating smart dancers with a strong foundation in modern dance.

Participation in competitive dance should be a fun and rewarding experience, here as with any team activity, there are expectations and requirements for each member.

Five dance classes per week are required:

  • 2 Ballet Classes
  • Leaps and Turns
  • Any two of the following classes: Musical Theatre, Contemporary, Tap, or Hip Hop

Note on class attendance: Dancers will be permitted a total two of unexcused absences per year from rehearsals and three from classes. Anything beyond this eliminates them from performances.

Examples of unexcused absences include travel, birthday parties, or other sports team commitments. Excused absences include illness, a religious event, a death in the family or other family emergencies.

Dancers are required to attend rehearsals and perform in two competition dances per year.

Rehearsals are on Sundays in the fall and winter/spring sessions. Dancers' schedules will depend on their class assignments. Each dancer will take their classes based on ability and experience level.

Competition rehearsals will be 15 weeks in the fall and 14 weeks in the spring. Classes will run for 18 weeks in the winter/spring (our normal winter/spring time frame). Participation in Sunday’s rehearsals is required.

Members will perform their competition dances in the annual recital as well. Recital is in the first week of June.

On June 18th at 10am, we will be having our first round of competition auditions for the 2022/23 season. For those that can’t make it, we will have one more in late August.

Dance Company students will receive 20% off of their classes and receive a complimentary travel jacket from Dovetail Studios.
