BENEFITS OF A COMPETITIVE DANCE COMPANY
Competitive dance improves techniques and abilities in a young dancer's life. It’s a unique experience where measurable improvements can be seen quickly, helping dancers gain more confidence when moving their bodies and participating under pressure. After gaining a new appreciation for their dance capabilities, our students are given many opportunities to shine during live performances.
As a member of the Dovetail Studios Competition Dance Team, a dancer will have a built-in group of friends and be part of a community of like-minded kids. Team members will learn new skills from each other and bond over a love of dance in a supportive environment. Together, company members will get a taste of what it’s like to be a “pro”!
THE DOVETAIL WAY
Dovetail Studio places a priority on process and learning rather than winning at all costs. Our courses are taught by courteous and knowledgeable instructors who are there to work with you - no matter what stage of dance you are in. We are a one of a kind competition dance team in Chicago.
As a studio run by professional dancers, we know what it takes to be successful in the field of dance. It is our promise that each child will learn dance in a way that builds confidence and skill. For more goal driven dancers, The Company will provide opportunities to excel and achieve new goals.
OUR COMPANIES
Doves 1: ages 7-8, two years of completed dance training.
Doves 2: ages 8 and older, three years of completed dance training.
FALL 2022 CLASS COMMITMENTS
Participation in competitive dance should be a fun and rewarding experience, here as with any team activity, there are expectations and requirements for each member. Requirements vary for each team.
- Doves 1 are required to take 2 days of Ballet, Tricks and Turns, and a weekly Rehearsal. 1 additional class is encouraged, but not required (modern, contemporary jazz, hip hop, tap, etc)
- Doves 2 are required to take 2 days of Ballet, Tricks and Turns, a weekly Rehearsal, and 2 additional classes per week (modern, contemporary jazz, musical theatre, hip hop, etc.)
Rehearsals are on Sundays during Fall and Winter sessions. Dancers' schedules will depend on their individual class assignments. Each dancer will take their classes based on ability and experience level.
Note on class attendance: Dancers will be permitted a total of two unexcused absences for rehearsal and three for classes. Additional absences may withdraw you from performing.
Unexcused absences include travel, birthday parties, or other sports team commitments. Excused absences include illness, a religious event, a death in the family or other family emergencies.
PERFORMANCE COMMITMENTS and fees
Competition rehearsals will work towards two competition pieces per year. Attendance for the competition events, rehearsals, and classes is mandatory.
Each competition requires an entry fee set by the hosting organization. This fee is typically based on the # of dancers participating and the level of the dance company. Additional fees from Dovetail for the teachers accompanying the team to competitions ranges from $150-200. These fees are split between the members of the team.
All members of Dovetail Competition Companies receive a 10% discount on session classes. Additionally, team members will participate in a professional photo shoot, and recieve a Competition Company travel jacket and long sleeve t-shirt.
COMPETITION COMPANY PLACEMENT
On August 20th at 11:15 am, we will be having our placement evaluation for the 2022/23 season for kids ages 7 and older. Class will meet on Saturday at 11:15am-12:45pm.
Dancers should bring dance shoes ( ballet or jazz) and wear leotard, tights or other form fitting dance wear. Hair will need to be pulled back and away from the face.
Dancers will be evaluated and put into the appropriate Doves Company.
