Adult Ballet: Beginner

Ballet originated in the Italian renaissance courts of the 15th century, where elite members of society were treated to a spectacle of dance and music. Transitioning from the court, to the opera, and then to the stage by the late 18th century, ballet began to stand on its own as an art form. By the 19th century, ballet began to look like what we see today; dancers in pointe shoes, narrative storylines, and ethereal athleticism. Ballet is a classical style of dance that is characterized by graceful movement, balance and symmetry, precision of movement, and a codified classical technique.

Adult Ballet: Beginner is for absolute beginners who have never had any ballet training before and want to learn. No experience needed!

Ballet is a great physical activity that involves cardio, stretching, concentration, music, and memory. It burns calories, lengthens and strengthens muscles and contributes to an all-around sense of well-being.

This is an engaging, upbeat, thoughtful class that challenges without frustrating the students while focusing on helping them adjust their technical placement and posture for better strength and control.

DRESS CODE

Comfortable, form-fitting attire. Ballet shoes are best, but socks will do.

One class per week. Registration required.

Adult Tap: Beginner

Tap originated in the early 19th century from African-American and Irish dance forms. As enslaved peoples had traditional African percussion instruments taken from them, they created rhythmic dances with percussive sounds to maintain their traditions. This style merged with wooden clog dancing brought to America by Irish immigrants, and thus the art of Tap dancing was born. 20th century Tap was pivotal in American culture, ranging from Vaudeville acts and the Harlem Renaissance, all the way to Hollywood and Broadway. Tap dancing is characterized by shoes with metal on the toes and heel that create the percussive sounds highlighted by the rhythmic motions of the feet.

Adult Tap: Beginner is for absolute beginners or dancers with some tapping experience.

Tap dance is simultaneously music and movement. This class draws on a diversity of approaches to integrating the basic fundamentals of these two elements. The emphasis will be on establishing a strong technical foundation of vocabulary, execution, clarity, and time.

Through warm-up exercises, improvisation, and choreography, students will learn how to shift weight, execute motions efficiently, recognize styles of music, and express rhythm through sound and movement.

Adult Contemporary Modern: Beginner

Modern dance is attributed to a rejection of Ballet’s structure and precision. Historically, the birth of Modern dance is credited to American dance performers Isadora Duncan and Ruth St. Denis in the mid 19th century. Modern dance forever changed dance technique; bringing the body horizontal to the floor, bending feet and limbs in non-traditional ways, and including regional dance movements from the black diaspora in the Americas and Caribbean (Katherine Dunham). To this day Modern dance breaks boundaries, addresses contemporary issues, and allows for expression and free form.

Adult Contemporary Modern: Beginner is for dancers who are new to the Modern dance technique. This class teaches dancers the curvature of the spine, how to move in and out of the floor safely, and cardiovascular locomotion.

DRESS CODE

Comfortable clothing required and bare feet.
